Does sulfuric acid and methanol react?

My chemistry teacher added methanol to sulfuric acid, and i couldn't see the test tube because I was too far away. So does it react? If not, what does it do...? I think it stayed in seperate layers or something like that... but I'm not sure. Thanks.
