What were some reasons for the relevance of polygamy in human society? (Historically speaking)?

Polygamy may be the solution to the problems of a society which has more women than men. This occurs specially after a war. The Quranic verses which mention polygamy were revealed after the battle of Uhud in which many Muslim men were martyred. The proportion of women to men increased considerably in the countries which took part in the first and second world wars.
